This article examines the semantics of substantive-adjectival phrases. The subject of the study is the potential of the compatibility of direct and secondary meanings in the structure of such phrases, as well as the limitations of syntagmatic possibilities. The purpose of this study is to analyze possible combinations of substantive-adjectival phrases not only depending on the type of meaning of the adjective name, but also depending on the type of meaning of the noun being defined, to identify limitations in the compatibility of direct and secondary meanings of nouns and adjectives. The method of semantic analysis is used. In the course of the study, potential models of the compatibility of direct and secondary meanings in the structure of substantive-adjectival phrases are identified, the limitations of the syntagmatic potential are analyzed. As a result of the analysis, we came to the conclusion that the limitations in compatibility are due to both the type of meaning of the adjective name and the type of meaning of the noun being defined, as well as the specific implementation of a particular type of meaning.
