Abstract
The paper considers various forms of clarification means used in the translation process to make foreign realities more understandable to recipients unacquainted with them. However, inadequate pragmatic adaptation of realities characterized by pure national specific features as often as not severely damages its contents? functional invariant resulting in discrepancy between estimated and actual correspondences. Examples borrowed from two American novels and their translations are compared on the basis of their falsely estimated cultural and pragmatic seeming identity. The factual material under consideration is subdivided into three groups on the basis of the adaptation types used by the translators in every regarded case. The accompanying commentaries include the authors' recommended versions illustrating their suggested thesis of the possibility to render such lexical units, in principle, with the help of the adequate pragmatic adaptation.
