Abstract
The article presents the results of a theoretical-experimental research into the problem of functioning of two competing punctuation marks in the XXI century Internet business discourse - dashes and colons .Based on the analysis of the punctuation usage of dashes and colons in stylistically differentiated text fragments of English and Russian discourses, as well as on the authors’ experimental data, there were found out typologically-oriented and specific features of the expression of various meanings transmitted by dashes and/or colons from the point of view of both the language system as a whole and its functional varieties. It was also found out that informal Internet communication in English is characterized, comparatively with Russian, by a wider range of linguistic creativity when using dashes and colons ; some of the distinctive semantic qualities of dashes and colons , traditionally associated with the latter, are neutralized in the Internet space due to the transition of the colon to the zone of "peripheral" language means; the formality of the user's attitude helps to slow down this process; when the functions of dashes and colons get close to be distinguished, the priority is given to dashes in both experimental and natural conditions of Internet communication.
