The purpose of the article is to consider the mechanism of the reader's perception of the meanings of unfamiliar words (agnonyms) when perceiving texts. In the course of the work, it was found that readers are capable of perceiving the meanings of Russian agnonyms without dictionaries: when they readying texts, the meaning of each of the agnonyms can be gradually refined in the minds of the recipients under the influence of the interaction of morphological, syntactic, word-formation, contextual and phonetic indicators.
