The article presents the results of monitoring the functioning of abstract vocabulary in the works of N.S. Leskov in the 70s. XIX century, which are a reworking of the plots of the readings of the Old Russian Prologue. The linguistic approach to the study of the results of interpreting the linguistic features of prose legends, in which abstract vocabulary plays an important role, needs to be studied more closely, as it fills the idea of the writer's individual stylistic manner. A comparative analysis of abstract vocabulary in the readings of the Prologue and Leskov's texts made it possible to identify the main word-building models of abstract vocabulary used in the readings and literary adaptations of legends, to determine their functions, to point out the connection between the moral and ethical aspects of readings and prologue plots with their lexical features. Comparative analysis of the identified quantitative characteristics of abstract and concrete vocabulary, abstract vocabulary of various word-formation models in the analyzed works of Leskov with the corresponding indicators of prologue articles showed that in highlighting and conveying high moral and philosophical issues and categories, the writer actively used language units and models.
