The article studies the activity of a senior Soviet military specialist, Colonel A.M. Potapov in the Egyptian-Israeli«War of Attrition» of 1969-1970. Based on his memoirs in the interview genre, as well as unpublished materials of the family archive, historical events of the participation of the Soviet air defense units in the United Arab Republic (OAR - Egypt) during the Operation Caucasus are reconstructed. A review of domestic and foreign historiography was made on issues of military involvement of the USSR on the side of Egypt during the events of the «War of Attrition». The tactical techniques of Soviet air defense against Israeli aviation were studied, biography of Colonel A.M. Potapov and his service in strengthening the Egyptian air defense system were analyzed. The Israeli methods of war against the Soviet air defense and the Egyptian armed forces were considered. The assessments of the air defense officer regarding the discipline, moral and psychological state of the Armed Forces of Egypt at the turn of the 1960-1970s as well as of the socio-political situation in the OAR were represented.
