The article is devoted to the problem of German-Turkish relations in the autumn of 1940 - spring of 1941 and the attempts of German diplomacy to attract Turkey to the Tripartite Pact in order to use its territory for the passage of Wehrmacht units in the direction of Egypt. As the situation in the Balkans escalated, the task of avoiding a military face-off with it was added to this aim. The article discusses and analyzes the key points of the negotiation process on these issues. Particular attention is drawn to the disagreements that arose between the top political leadership of the Third Reich and the Ambassador in Ankara, F. von Papen, about the prospects of relations with Turkey. In conclusion, the results of the negotiations for this period of time are summed up, the reasons for their essentially unsuccessful outcome are revealed.
