The goal is to develop a coherence model relevant for a pair of sentences. There are two different approaches to the problem of coherence: top-down approach proceeding from the presence of the coherence in the text, and bottom-up approach stating that the coherence between two sentences provides for a coherence of the whole text. In the article is implemented the latter approach. It is proposed to use the notions of semantic gap, pragmatic addition, and relevant answer. The notion of the semantic gap refers to the fact that there is no direct semantic relationship between sentences. Pragmatic addition is the sum of possible gap filling, the most relevant for this pair supplement is called the relevant answer. Formalizing coherence requires considering semantic and pragmatic components of the sentence meaning such as literal meaning, presupposition, pragmatic entailment, generalized and particularized conversational implicatures, free pragmatic enrichment, saturation, teleological entailment, and unexplained cause. The model of the formalization of coherent relationships is illustrated by the analysis of examples.
