This article analyses the problems of holding convicted women with children and in correctional institutions in a number of countries in the Americas, Europe and Russia. The study was carried out by studying the legislation of prison systems and the practice of implementing the enshrined provisions, on the organization of conditions for serving sentences related to isolation from society for mothers with children. As a result of the analysis, it was established: possible options for children to live in both the territory of the correctional institution and beyond; The age limit for the child withthe mother; The social and living conditions created in correctional institutions for holding convicts with children, as well as the possibility of obtaining medical care; The peculiarities of the application of penalties to convicted mothers. The influence of the fact of the child's stay in the conditions of a correctional institution on the psycho-physical development of his personality was analyzed. Positive experience is highlighted, which can be partially adopted to improve the domestic penitentiary system.
