The purpose of this article is to consider the main approaches to determining the position of popular texts about science in the system of functional styles of the Russian language. Three points of view are presented. The first one considers popular texts about science as one of the substyles of the scientific style. There is the list of communicative qualities of speech that are characteristic of all texts of scientific style, including popular texts about science. The second point of view distinguishes popular texts about science into an independent functional style. The third point of view is based on the fact that popular texts about science are interstitial phenomena, combining features of several functional styles of the Russian language.
