The subject of the study is the antonyms of the lexeme надежда (hope) as the name of one of the poles of the semantic unity ‘hope-despair’: отчаяние , безнадежность and разочарование . The definitions of these lexemes from explanatory dictionaries are analyzed. For each of the antonyms, the semantic variants are singled out, and antonymic connections of these variants with the semantic variants of the lexeme надежда are traced. The representation of these lexemes in the Russian National Corpus is studied on the basis of 500 examples of the use of each lexeme. Additional semantic variants of the lexemes отчаяние and разочарование are marked on the basis of examples of their usage. The presence of meanings indicating the emotional state of the subject is confirmed for the lexemes отчаянность , безвыходность , безысходность , беспросветность , безнадега and мрак , despite the fact that they are not always represented in lexicographic sources. It seems that the lexeme чернуха does not have such a meaning at all.
