The Chicago Monuments Project (2021) initiative to discuss controversial urban sites caused alarm in Croatia, since the sculptural group “Indians” (1928) created by its famous native Ivan Me?trovi? had been included in the list of controversial monuments. Some Croatian commentators took the opportunity to attack left-wing liberals with the notorious “cancel culture”. Others began to discuss the paradoxes of cultural selection in the postcolonial situation. From left and right there were reproaches against the Minister of Culture and Media for being too timid or counterfeit. But the pathos of the low-cost struggle to preserve the Croatian cultural heritage in distant America drowned out the rare voices of those concerned about its condition in their homeland.
