The relevance of the research topic is caused by the growing role of the media in shaping the legal consciousness of Russian society and its views on the socio-political processes taking place in the modern world. Specialized publications play a significant role in disseminating information about the development of legal science. Since the 19th century, legal periodicals have become an independent tool in the popularization of legal knowledge. The article considers specific materials from legal journals, identifies the main thematic areas that reflect a wide range of interests of the editors of a particular publication. As a result, it was found that already in the XIX century legal periodicals carried out the function of legal education, dissemination of legal knowledge, which, in the absence of other ways of legal informing the population, was important for the Russian Empire.
