The city hodonymic space changes because of the various reasons influence. These transformations reflect such social processes as social priorities changes, political system modification. They also record the most significant for a particular locus historical events. Due to this fact of particular interest is the process of renaming that often dictated by non-linguistic reasons. Based on cartographic and archival sources, the article analyzes Stalingrad’s personal memoratives in three historical sections: 1925, when Tsaritsyn was renamed Stalingrad, 1942, preceding the Battle of Stalingrad and large-scale destruction of the city, and 1959, shortly before the renaming of Stalingrad to Volgograd. The place of personal memoratives in the hodonymic structure is determined, the main trends in the nomination of linear and point objects, the reasons for their renaming are identidied.
