At present, scientific mentoring is not so much a popular trend as a realised necessity. It is a serious and responsible process gaining momentum in the country's higher education system, the importance of which in the formation of social identity, social education of the young generation, and training of scientific personnel can hardly be overestimated. The paper presents the results of a sociological study conducted as part of the large-scale project "Scientific Mentoring in Russian Higher Education Institutions: Institutional Models, Professional Roles, and Daily Practices" initiated by the Ural Federal University. The technical parameters of the study implemented in Volgograd (as one of the project territories) are described, and the results obtained are presented. The data obtained in the course of the study made it possible to identify the main social characteristics (socio-demographic, professional and personal), which, according to the respondents, should be possessed by a research mentor. The difficulties that students face when performing research work in higher education and their (students') focus on the possibility of receiving support, gaining experience and knowledge, new competences, building a constructive relationship with their research mentor were revealed.
