Social changes that led to the transition from an industrial to a post-industrial society forced scientists to talk about the formation of a new group of workers - the precariat. This group includes workers who don’t have a stable job and who lack basic job security. In 2011, in his book The Precariat: A Dangerous New Class, the British sociologist Guy Standing conceptualized this concept. He calls the precariat a new class and notes that it is a class that is only in the process of becoming. The purpose of the work is to consider the causes that led to the emergence of the precariat, to identify the main characteristics of this group. The paper presents the results of an empirical study of the size of the precariat and their main characteristics. Using the data of the «Russian Longitudinal Monitoring Survey - HSE» (2002-2021), it was revealed that being part of the precariat has a negative effect on a number of socio-demographic characteristics.
