The purpose of the paper is to determine the degree of reliability of the chronicle reports about the relationship between the Cossack «army» and the Siberian Tatars at the time of «Еrmak’s seizure» of the «Kuchum kingdom». The author compares the considered chronicle reports of the 17th - first half of the 18th centuries with each other, taking into account the origin of these literary sources, which then developed in the east of Russia. An analysis of these reports allows us to believe that during the years of Еrmak’s expedition, Siberian Tatars could be brought to shert, but not to Moscow sovereigns, but to the Cossack «team», and were involved in the execution of various assignments without being enrolled in the ranks of the Cossack settlements. It appears that most of the relevant chronicle reports are trustworthy, but separate testimony of the two editions of the «historical story», which came out of the Stroganovs’ circle, and the Likhachev chronicle are doubtful.
