Interacting and self-determining literary and linguistic factors as the basis of the fiction translation process are dealt with. The protagonists? individual personality traits - their destinies, behavioral and psychological peculiarities, looks, deeds, and characteristic utterances are analyzed by means of comparative methodology as applied to parallel excerpts borrowed from a contemporary American novel and its published translation into Russian. Paramount attention is paid to erroneous and deliberately distorted translation versions followed by detailed commentaries and in most cases by their adequate changes in the form of contextual correspondences suggested by the authors. The classification of the factual material is performed on the basis of its thematic subdivision (three sections) and the resultant variances conditioned by concrete linguistic factors (four subsections). The examined examples of translation and the data resulted from their analysis may be of interest not only to translators of fiction but also to lecturers of the theory and practice of translation, lexicology, comparative stylistic and interlingual communication.
