Abstract
The article aims to identify the characteristic features of conducting a discussion by Professor E.A. Molev (1947-2021) on problems of the history of the ancient Black Sea region. A block of debatable problems is highlighted, to which E.A. Molev turned throughout his life. Attention is drawn to how he defended his conceptual positions, how he presented controversial issues, and how his personality is reflected in scholarly polemics. E.A. Molev carried out a detailed analysis of the arguments of supporters of concepts that he did not share, and in case of disagreement with the general conclusions, he found certain correct points in the details of the analysis and theoretical understanding; considered it necessary not to go beyond the limits of what the sources allow to reconstruct. Adequately perceiving the arguments against his point of view, he could adjust his statements in connection with new archaeological data. He always maintained a strict academic vocabulary and a calm, without excessive emotional overtones, manner of objections. Overall, E.A. Molev is a worthy example of a scholar participating in academic discussions.
