The article analyzes the mechanisms of formation of metonymic meanings in derived nouns and derived verbs. The purpose of the study: to identify the principle of the development of metonymic meanings in the analyzed derivatives of words. Both mutational and modification derivatives act as an object. The study uses the method of semantic analysis. It is noted that the syncretism of semantic derivation and word-formation can be observed at the heart of the development of metonymic meaning. The formed values can be considered syncretically: as a result of metonymic transfer and as a consequence of the word-formation process. It is also noted that this phenomenon is not always regular, systemic in nature. A verb may have one-morpheme derivatives in different meanings, but this is implemented inconsistently. Differentiation of the direct and metonymic meanings of the verb can be supported word-formatively, as evidenced by different derivatives.
