Attention is focused on certain problematic aspects of the criminalistic characteristics of crimes, which have reached a level where its further development does not contribute to self-improvement. This negatively affects private crime investigation methods, the formation of which is based on the information contained in their criminalistic characteristics. The author is of the opinion that it is inappropriate to abandon the forensic characterization of crimes, but considers it necessary to transform it on the basis of the established doctrine of the material structure of crime. A proposal has been made to consider the elements of the material structure of crimes in inextricable unity with their criminalistic characteristics. This approach allows us to talk about a qualitatively new concept: a criminalistic characteristic of the material structure of a crime.
