The article is devoted to the study of the works of three French travelers: Theophile de Valcourt, Edmond Cotteau and Henry Lapauze who visited Nizhny Novgorod. The perception of the city by these travelers as representatives of different professions is interesting; a physician, a traveler and an art historian left their impressions of the city. The works of these authors became a source for us both for studying everyday life on the road and the image of the Volga city and the largest trading city in Russia. In addition, the authors give an idea of the local residents and their way of life. Undoubtedly, it is also important to study the everyday life of a European traveler in Russia in the last third of the 19th century. Based on sources, the article shows the living conditions of travelers, service in hotels and other accommodation facilities, transport links in the Volga cities and between them. The purpose of the article is to introduce into scientific circulation and a source study description of new sources that will help enrich our knowledge of how Nizhny Novgorod was seen by French travelers of the 19th century. The issues of the relationship of the analyzed descriptions with the texts of other travelogues, as well as the historiographical contextualization of travelogues will be studied in the authors' future publications. The period that interests us is the last third of the 19th century - the time of political and economic rapprochement between France and Russia.
