The article considers the current problems of the essence of digital currency and its features. The importance of this institution is described by examining the genesis of digital currencies. The concept of digital currency is given, the legal nature of the digital ruble as the third form of national currency issued by the Bank of Russia in addition to non-cash and cash is considered. Distinctive features of digital currency, as well as the digital ruble, are highlighted. Digital currencies are considered as money, as property, as property rights from the point of view of domestic and foreign law enforcement practice. It is concluded that there are no grounds to consider the digital ruble a cryptocurrency and digital currency in accordance with the legislation of the Russian Federation.
