Abstract
The article is devoted to the linguistic analysis of the culinary and gastronomic discourse, the phenomenon of metaphorization in the system of naming food products in Germanic languages. Based on the material of the German and English languages, the significant productivity of metaphor in the conceptual sphere under consideration has been revealed. From the point of view of lexical composition, it is very diverse and contains both archaic layers of the vocabulary common to the Indo-European and Germanic languages, as well as numerous borrowings. Gastronomic metaphors for the most part are anthropocentric in nature, naming appearance (often crude designations of parts of the human body), character traits (often negative) and social status (often low). Secondary nominations tend to exhibit coarse stylistic overtones and are used as slurs in colloquial speech and dialects. Cases of the development of figurative meanings with a positive connotation and the functioning of gluttonims as euphemisms are quite rare. Thus, the analysis of culinary and gastronomic discourse made it possible to identify gluttonims that function with figurative meanings in hunting, sports, student, medical and plumbing jargon, as well as as professionalisms in energy construction, terms in architecture and technology. At the same time, both the native Germanic and borrowed gluttonims underwent metaphorical rethinking.
