The work considers the semantic and pragmatic features of the functioning of the introductory word “koroche” (“in short”) in modern Russian speech. The material for the analysis is the contexts of its use extracted from the Russian National Corpus. It is shown that in the speech implementation of the introductory word “koroche” (“in short”) there are significant semantic increments that cannot be reduced to its typical semantics ?briefly speaking? in dictionaries and grammars: it can mean ?otherwise speaking (in other words)?, ?in general?, ?on the contrary?, ?you see?, ?pay attention?, etc. Also, for the introductory word “koroche” (“in short”) a substantial functional diversity was found in different speech practices. It is concluded that the analyzed introductory word “koroche” (“in short”) can act as a meta-language indicator of the manipulative communicative strategy de re, as a signal of ironic or emotional-evaluative reinterpretation of the subsequent utterance from the position of the speaker, as a means of attracting the attention of the interlocutor, and also as a parasite word that complicates communication.
