The article presents the analysis of the multimodal conceptualization processes of the social concepts толерантность and tolerance in Russian and American linguistic cultures in a comparative aspect involving verbal, visual-figurative and gestural modes. Using the methods of semiotic analysis, the cultural specificity of the conceptualization of tolerance is studied, the mental and semantic traditions of designating the studied social phenomenon in pictorial symbolism are determined, linguistic and cultural meanings encoded by gestures are analyzed. The results of the study showed that dominant cultural values provide a shift in meaning compared to sources of borrowing, which manifest themselves in mental attitudes that determine social behavior. The symbolism of tolerance, embodied in a pictorial and gestural mode, is expressed by a pictorial metaphor that forms the semantic structure of a symbol consisting of a sensual image and its symbolic meaning.
