This article uses archival materials that have been little studied and partly introduced into the scientific circulation for the first time to examine the first communications of the West German writer Heinrich B?ll with the Soviet Union during the thaw. This corpus of sources makes it possible to trace how the writer came to the attention of Soviet functionaries, how contacts with him were established before his arrival in the USSR, and how the meeting of the German delegation in which he first came to the Soviet Union was organized.
