Digital financial instruments are currently becoming more widespread. However, the regulatory framework for their use is in its infancy, and sometimes is completely absent (in relation to cryptocurrency). Criminals actively take advantage of this circumstance. During the investigation of criminal cases involving crimes committed using digital financial instruments, a number of problems arise with the formation of an evidence base. Significant assistance in solving these problems can be provided by persons with specialized knowledge. Moreover, not only in the field of computer technology, but also economists. The purpose of this work is to study the issues of applying specialized economic knowledge to form a high-quality evidence base when investigating crimes using digital financial assets, digital currency and cryptocurrency. The article proposes typical questions submitted for resolution to a forensic economist. It is shown how the factual data obtained by the economist in answering these questions allows establishing the circumstances subject to proof in a criminal case. The following methods were used in the study: comparative analysis, systematization, induction, deduction. The article examines organizational and methodological ways of applying special economic knowledge in investigating crimes involving digital financial assets, digital currency, and cryptocurrency.
