The study of M. Gorky's journalistic style, which was formed during the Samara period of his journalistic activity, is one of the insufficiently explored problems of the modern Gorky studies. This article is devoted to a methodology for studying the functions of concrete and abstract substantives, the typology of their thematic groups created in the process of analysis and interpretation of the satirical articles is substantiated. The research methodology is based on the experience of studying the functioning of concrete and abstract vocabulary in the language of the M. Gorky’s early works, developed by Nizhny Novgorod scientists. A methodology is expected that considers the frequency of use of substantives, the genre specificity of the text, the time of creation of the texts, and the problems of the satirical articles. The aim of the research is to identify the features of the contextual functioning of substantive vocabulary in the journalistic cycle “By the way.” The novelty of the research is determined by the proof of the thesis about the most crucial function of substantive vocabulary in expressing the author's conception of reality, the motivation for the plot-compositional development of the narration.
