Modern trends in the development of the institution of doctoral studies in the European Union and the USA are analyzed. Some general principles for organization of Ph.D. programs are discussed, including their structure, contents and duration, organization of research environment, and funding schemes for the research done by Ph.D. students. The results of the analysis are relevant for understanding the general principles of preparation of scientific cadres and the approaches to improving doctoral programs in Russian universities.
