The object of research in this article is the genre of travelogue. Referring to the works of such Russian researchers as V. Guminsky, V. Mikhailov, M. Shadrina, E. Stetsenko, N. Maslova and some others, the author reveals some mutually exclusive definitions of this genre. The author makes the following conclusions: travelogue is an independent genre of fiction characterized by genre freedom, a special role of the author's image, the presence of documentary elements along with fiction, and synthetic nature that presumes the presence of some elements of other genres (diary, letter, report, joke, autobiography).
