The paper criticizes some stereotypes (connected with the perception of political structures and processes in
North-Eastern Rus during the first half of the 12th century) in the works of historians, who belong to the so-called
«Froyanovs group». The author demonstrates that it is the authority of princes (kniaz) that really dominated in the
political life of the region during this period. The role of urban communities usually increased only in the moments
of struggle for power among the feudal elite.
