Abstract
In the times of the Principate, soldiers paid for their personal armament, and the State spent the money to produce military machines (siege machines, artillery) and consumable weapons (spears, slingshots, catapult bolts, arrows). The State also produced standardized and inexpensive armament for the army stock fund from which recruits received arms and armour in installments. In addition, the State made procurements from private armourers at fixed prices. For mass production, military workshops chose effective, but relatively cheap types of military equipment. However, due to inflation this scheme began growing less and less efficient, and the State had to reorganize the whole production system of the military industrial complex.
