The article considers precedent units of the language that are the subject of a specific sphere of investigation,
precedent onomasiology. It studies the gnoseological roots of the development of “precedent units” as a nominative
super category in the light of other linguistic theories. Special prominence is given to the investigation of the linguocognitive
base of precedent units, the description of their categorial characteristics and basic notions that explain the
systematization of precedent units within one nominative category.
