The problems of polluted soil ecotoxicological evaluation and the choice of biotest techniques are considered. A
biotest complex is proposed whose application gives a reliable characteristic of the soil ecotoxicological state. The
biotest technique to determine soil phytotoxicity developed at the St. Petersburg Scientific Research Centre for Ecological
Safety (RAS) and listed in the Federal Register is shown to be highly sensitive and informative. The proposed
biotest complex has been tested in the field experiment on soddy-podzolic loamy soil contaminated by different
oil doses. A comparison is made of laboratory experiment results with the field experiment data.
