Abstract
In this paper we analyze some problems that we meet in translating Chakavian poetry into Russian. We discuss these problems using the example of Zlatan Jak?i?, a well-known Croatian poet writing in one of the dialects of the Croatian language. We have resolved the essential question in deciding whether it is necessary to translate Croatian dialectal poetry into another dialect or into standard language by concluding that it should be translated into standard, because Chakavian dialect is very different from Russian dialects in its relations to standard. There are also many other problems especially at the level of different cultures, and although these are both Slavic languages the cultural background is very different, and should be taken into consideration.
