A review of main concepts of plot and motif theory in Russian and foreign philology is presented. This problem
was extensively studied since the turn of the 19th-20th centuries in the works of A. Veselovsky, V. Propp, O. Freidenberg,
A. Dandes, Kongas Maranda and some other researchers. In this context, several general lines for the interpretation
of these terms have been proposed. An integrated approach to the analysis of theoretical propositions
provides a holistic picture of plot and motif as instruments of literary research.
