The article is focused on the dialectics of the soul of a character-wanderer depicted by Leo Tolstoy in his later
work. This period of the writer's creative development is characterized as his search for the meaning of life, and
religion plays a dominating role in this search. Religion in this case is independent, it is created by Tolstoy, it is
«refined from mysticism», it is his own creation. A new approach to life forms the new character in his work. We
consider that the depiction of the character-wanderer was part of the literary method of Tolstoy already in the early
years of his creative independence. However, it was less conscious than in his later work. During all his literary
activity, especially during his later period, Leo Tolstoy used different artistic means and images to show his main
character - «the truth» - to his readers in the most accurate and understandable way. Any person could be the carrier
of «the truth», but when the author singled out his character for this mission from a mass of people, he made him
different and strange. In Tolstoys opinion, only such a different person could tell «the truth» to the world.
