This paper considers Homeric Greeks' views on labour activity and their understanding of its different kinds and its importance. In the epic tradition, agriculture and cattle breeding were regarded as main occupations for a man. The attitude to handicrafts was ambivalent because this was considered to be an occupation of the lowest classes of the society, however, at the same time, the epic world always admired the products of handicrafts. In domestic life, there was a clear gender differentiation of labour in accordance with the Greeks' understanding of male and female nature. |
