Main elements of the competency building and activity approaches, as well as the results of their use for the organization of instructional preparation of students are discussed. The objectives of training are presented as a system of independent typical job tasks. The subject-matter of education is revealed in the interaction of actions and knowledge as a method for solving any typical task and knowledge benchmarks for each action of the method. A modular structure of instructional preparation is proposed where modules correspond to typical job tasks. Independent work of students is organized by means of project activities.
