Abstract
The history and contemporary understanding of the idea of individualization of teaching are considered. The development of individual teaching in Russian schools educational theory and practice is shown. Four main methodological approaches are studied. In the context of these approaches, the problem of individualization has been discussed for many years. Retrospective analysis of these ideas and the practice of teaching individualization make it possible to clarify the very notion of individualization that has received an impetus of innovational development in higher education pedagogics.
