Abstract
In his novel «Herzog», Saul Bellow represents the theme of romanticism in a new form: he sees overcoming modern spiritual crisis by returning to romantic values. An intellectual is appearing to us in an atmosphere of pragmatism and primitivism - Moses Herzog, professor of philosophy and a romanticist of the 20th century. The heros character traits, themes of insanity, duplicity, guilt, death are investigated; the features of the novels style are outlined. The philosophical comprehension of such problems as suffering, freedom, life and death, which are important both in the past and at present, occurs through the prism of the novel's agenda.
