The author considers the problem of reason in L. Tolstoy's trilogy «Childhood», «Adolescence», «Youth»
and M. Gorky's trilogy «My Childhood», «In the World», «My universities». The author challenges the point of
view according to which L. Tolstoy acts as an «artist - intuitionist» in his work. His idea of moral self-improvement
is based on a deeply positive attitude to reason and knowledge, while M. Gorky in his trilogy poeticizes thinking.
Gorky's concept of intellectualism is connected with the principle of «heroization» and revolutionary understanding
of the world.
