Some aspects of the interpretation of A. Stifters novel «Witiko» are outlined. This work of literature by the
noted Austrian prosaist has been thoroughly studied in German literary criticism, but has not been the subject of the
analysis of Russian researches yet. The following aspects are of particular interest: the originality of the novels
genre, the principles of historical method used by the author, the use of Roman primary sources. The artistic structure
of the novel deserves special attention. The space-time model, or chronotope, is drawn up in an original manner.
