Abstract
The Volga River is not only a landscape motif for the Russian painting, but also a symbol of freedom and natural energy that determines the psychological and emotional state of works of art. The landscape of the Volga in the works of Samara - Kuybyshev painters is, at the same time, a «major waterway» of the country in industrial landscapes by O. Kartashev and A. Kulakovsky, and an image of «pure» nature, free of technology, in the expressive works of V. Purygin.
