Whitman's first translations were published in Russia in 1899 - 7 years after the poet's death. Russia was one of
the first countries to appreciate the innovative creative work of the American poet. The famous American poet's
works were translated by: I.S. Turgenev, L.N. Tolstoy, K.D. Balmont, and K.I. Chukovsky. Each of them found in
the poems of Walt Whitman's something new. |
