The paper examines the usage of ethnonyms in the writings of Byzantine emperor Manuel II Palaeologus (1391-1425). The author shows how traditional and contemporary meanings of these ethnonyms are intertwined and concludes that their contextual and cultural analysis give important clues to understanding Byzantine cultural and political realities and attitudes of the 15th century. |
