Abstract
A method for the analysis of butyral groups in polyvinyl butyral (PVB) samples including the hydrolysis reac-tion of PVB, stream-distilling of the derived fugitive products, extracting them with hexane and quantitative deter-mination of these products by gas-liquid chromatography (GLC) is proposed. It is established that in addition to butanal, butyric acid, 2,4,6-tripropyl-1,3,5-trioxane and 2-ethyl-2-hexenal are the products of the hydrolysis of PVB that cannot be analysed by earlier methods to determine butyral groups in PVB based on hydroxylamine hydrochlo-ride and sodium bisulfite.
