Abstract
Specific features of the wave modulation instability of two-dimensional lattices are discussed as compared to one-dimensional lattices and spatially continuous systems. We present some qualitative considerations based on the resonant wave interaction theory, an analytical calculation in the approximation of slowly varying amplitudes and numerical simulation results for a two-dimensional nonlinear Klein-Gordon lattice
