The results of the study to obtain trimethylgallium by direct reaction of a Ga-Mg mixture with methyl iodide in the amyl ether solution are presented. It has been shown that the production of trimethylgallium is substantially affected by by-product processes such as the Wurtz reaction of methyl iodide with organometallic compounds and metallic gallium agglomeration. The optimal molar ratio of initial reagents has been found to be Ga:Mg:CH
